A complete guide to the recommended vaccination schedule for children in Malaysia, covering both government programme vaccines and optional private vaccines.
Vaccinations are one of the most powerful tools we have to protect our children from serious, preventable diseases. Malaysia's National Immunisation Programme (NIP) provides free vaccines at government health clinics, but there are also important optional vaccines available privately.
The National Immunisation Programme (NIP)
The government provides free vaccines for all Malaysian children at designated health clinics and hospitals. Here's a simplified schedule:
At Birth
- Hepatitis B (1st dose)
- BCG (Tuberculosis)
1 Month
- Hepatitis B (2nd dose)
2 Months
- DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) 1st dose
- IPV (Inactivated Polio) 1st dose
- Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b) 1st dose
- Hepatitis B (3rd dose)
- PCV (Pneumococcal) 1st dose
3 & 5 Months
- Booster doses of DTaP, IPV, Hib, PCV
6 Months
- Rotavirus (2nd or 3rd dose depending on brand)
12 Months
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) 1st dose
- Varicella (Chickenpox) 1st dose
18 Months
- DTaP and MMR booster doses
Optional Private Vaccines Worth Considering
These are not in the NIP but offer meaningful protection:
| Vaccine | Protects Against | When |
|---|---|---|
| Hepatitis A | Hepatitis A virus | 12–23 months (2 doses) |
| Varicella (if not in NIP) | Chickenpox | 12–18 months |
| Influenza | Seasonal flu | Yearly from 6 months |
| Meningococcal | Meningitis | From 2 months |
Tips for Nervous Children (and Parents!)
- Bring your child's vaccination record booklet to every appointment
- Comfort your child with a favourite toy or object
- Plan a small reward afterwards — a healthy treat or extra story time
- Stay calm yourself — children pick up on parental anxiety
